Statement

For me painting is about process. From the spark of inspiration to meditatively preparing a surface all the way to hanging the finished work. This journey of creation often surprises me, Happy accidents can shape a painting in a way I hadn't anticipated and these unexpected delights keep me coming back to the easel.

Throughout this process I hold on to the initial feeling of inspiration, what struck me enough to begin the process? I want this bolt of feeling to be in the finished work no matter where it goes on its journey. Then when paint hits the panel, I can let instinct take over, combining observation and abstraction to construct the image.  The painting begins to develop its own presence and provides a new source of input in a sort of feedback loop. Working in this way allows for the creation of unexpected imagery that leaves room for the viewer to bring their own interpretation and memories to the painting.

Ultimately I want to create work that brings a living presence to its new home and I feel honored and grateful to be able to do that with my life.
